Sometime in 1995 ES was formed. They developed Age of Empires and released it in 1997. After that they decided to create a sequel to the game, Age of Kings. It was intended to have a short development time (9 months) in order to release it for Christmas. But they delayed the release time until the game was better, and better. In Late July of 1999 the beta was released. In late September and early October the game spread all over North America. In the months following it received many positive reviews, and became a very popular game.
